02What is excessive daytime sleepiness?

More Than
Feeling Tired.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) means an ongoing tendency to become unusually drowsy or struggle to stay awake during hours when you would normally be alert.

You might notice it while reading, watching television, working, or attending a meeting. Persistent symptoms can have several causes, so the evaluation looks at both your nights and your daytime experience.

Sleepiness and fatigue can occur together, but describing which you feel helps your clinician investigate the cause.

Sleepiness

A tendency to doze off, fall asleep, or struggle to remain awake and alert.

Fatigue

A lack of energy, motivation, or physical and mental stamina, without necessarily feeling ready to fall asleep.

03Possible causes

One Symptom.
Several Possibilities.

Daytime sleepiness does not point to a single diagnosis. We consider sleep quality, sleep timing, health history, and daily routines together.

Sleep apnea and interrupted rest — illustrative placeholder

Sleep apnea

Repeated breathing disruptions can fragment sleep without you realizing it. Reduced alertness, difficulty concentrating, and daytime sleepiness may follow.

Making time for sufficient sleep — illustrative placeholder

Not enough sleep

Regularly getting less sleep than your body needs can make staying awake difficult. The amount, quality, and consistency of your sleep all matter.

Evaluating other sleep conditions — illustrative placeholder

Other sleep disorders

Conditions that interfere with restorative rest or normal wakefulness can cause sleepiness. Your symptoms help guide which disorders should be evaluated.

Shift work and changing sleep schedules — illustrative placeholder

Irregular sleep schedules

Shift work and changing bedtimes can disrupt your sleep-wake rhythm. Sleeping at times that conflict with your body clock may affect daytime alertness.

Reviewing medications and medical history — illustrative placeholder

Medications or health conditions

Some medicines and medical conditions cause drowsiness. Reviewing your health history and prescriptions helps identify possible contributors.

Daily routines and emotional well-being — illustrative placeholder

Stress, mood and lifestyle

Stress, mood symptoms, sleep habits, and daily routines may affect your nights and energy. Understanding the wider picture supports appropriate care.

04Signs worth discussing

Recognize
the Pattern.

Talk with a sleep specialist if you regularly notice these experiences. They are clues for an evaluation, not a diagnosis on their own.

  • Dozing while reading or watching television
  • Feeling very sleepy in meetings or quiet activities
  • Needing frequent naps to get through the day
  • Difficulty maintaining concentration or alertness
  • Feeling sleepy despite enough time in bed
  • Waking without feeling refreshed

  • Someone noticing pauses in your breathing during sleep
  • Feeling dangerously sleepy while driving
05How we evaluate daytime sleepiness

From Your Symptoms
to Clearer Answers.

At Houston Sleep Health, we look beyond sleepiness itself to understand what may be contributing to it.

The goal is to identify the likely cause and choose an appropriate next step, with testing when it is clinically useful.

Schedule an evaluation

    YOUR CARE JOURNEY / 01

    Review your symptoms

Discuss when sleepiness occurs, how often it happens, and how it affects work, daily activities, and safety.

  2. 02
    YOUR CARE JOURNEY / 02

    Review your sleep history

Explore your schedule, sleep duration, nighttime symptoms, awakenings, and whether sleep feels restorative.

  3. 03
    YOUR CARE JOURNEY / 03

    Consider possible causes

  4. 04
    YOUR CARE JOURNEY / 04

    Test when appropriate

Your clinician may recommend sleep testing based on the symptoms and findings. Not everyone needs a sleep study.

  5. 05
    YOUR CARE JOURNEY / 05

    Personalize your treatment

Once the likely cause is identified, review suitable treatment options and the next steps in your care.

06Treatment depends on the cause

The Right Care
Starts with Why.

There is no single treatment for excessive daytime sleepiness. Your plan should address what is causing or contributing to your symptoms.

If obstructive sleep apnea is identified, options may include PAP therapy, an oral appliance, appropriate weight-management strategies, or other treatments for selected patients.

Other causes require a different approach. Your specialist can help match treatment to your diagnosis and circumstances, coordinating with your other clinicians when needed.

07Why address daytime sleepiness?

Better Rest Matters
Beyond Bedtime.

Persistent sleepiness can affect concentration, productivity, relationships, and the ability to carry out everyday activities safely. Understanding the cause helps you take appropriate steps toward better sleep and quality of life.

Focus and attention

Staying alert supports concentration during work, conversations, and everyday tasks.

Daily participation

Sleepiness can make it harder to stay engaged with responsibilities and the people around you.

Everyday safety

Addressing drowsiness matters when driving, operating equipment, or doing tasks that require sustained attention.

08When to see a sleep specialist

Still Sleepy?
Let’s Look Closer.

Consider an evaluation when sleepiness persists, interferes with daily life, or occurs despite what seems like adequate sleep.

These accompanying symptoms are especially helpful to mention. A specialist can assess whether a sleep disorder may be involved.

Discuss your sleep
  • Loud or persistent snoring
  • Gasping, choking, or witnessed breathing pauses
  • Frequent nighttime awakenings
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty staying awake during the day
  • Significant problems with concentration or alertness
09Your questions, answered

Frequently
Asked Questions.

Answers about fatigue, sleepiness, and finding the cause.

Ask our team
What is excessive daytime sleepiness?

It is a persistent tendency to feel unusually drowsy or struggle to remain awake during the day, including during activities when you would normally expect to be alert.

Is excessive daytime sleepiness the same as fatigue?

No. Sleepiness involves a tendency to doze or fall asleep. Fatigue describes reduced energy or stamina. You can experience either symptom or both together.

Can sleep apnea cause daytime sleepiness?

Yes. Repeated breathing disturbances can disrupt restorative sleep and reduce daytime alertness. However, not everyone with sleep apnea reports sleepiness.

Why am I sleepy even though I get enough sleep?

Time in bed does not always mean restorative sleep. Sleep disorders, irregular schedules, medications, and other health factors may contribute even when sleep duration seems adequate.

Will I need a sleep study?

Not necessarily. Your specialist will first review your symptoms, sleep history, and medical background, then decide whether testing would help clarify the cause.

How is excessive daytime sleepiness treated?

Treatment is based on the underlying cause. Addressing an identified sleep disorder or other contributing factor may improve alertness; your clinician will recommend an individualized plan.
