What Is
Genio® Therapy?

Genio combines a battery-free implanted stimulator with an external sleep wearable. The stimulator is placed under the chin during an outpatient surgical procedure.

The wearable includes a disposable patch and an external battery, called the activation chip. Worn under the chin at night, it supplies power to the implant.

Activation is typically planned approximately eight weeks after the procedure, with timing confirmed by your treating team. An optional smartphone app supports usage tracking and adjustments within a predefined range.

The activation chip is charged daily using a small portable charger, including when traveling. Houston Sleep Health can guide your evaluation and discuss next steps with appropriate ENT specialists and surgeons.

THE IMPLANT

Battery-Free Stimulator

Placed under the chin during an outpatient procedure, the implant delivers stimulation to the hypoglossal nerves. It is powered by the external wearable rather than an implanted battery.

THE NIGHTLY WEARABLE

Patch & Activation Chip

A disposable adhesive patch holds the activation chip beneath your chin. The chip is the external battery that powers treatment while you sleep and is recharged daily.

04Hypoglossal nerve stimulation

How Genio
Therapy Works.

Genio stimulates the hypoglossal nerves on both sides of the tongue. This activates tongue muscles to help maintain an open airway during sleep.

Your system includes the implant, sleep wearable, disposable patch, external activation chip, and optional smartphone app.

05Clinical results

Research Behind
the Therapy.

Clinical research has reported reductions in sleep apnea events with bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation, alongside high rates of daily use and patient satisfaction.

Results vary from person to person. An evaluation and ongoing follow-up help determine whether treatment is appropriate and how well it is working for you.

Study reference: Woodson, B. T., et al. (2025). Bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation for obstructive sleep apnea: a nonrandomized clinical trial. Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

The study used the first-generation Genio implant. The U.S. model includes FDA-approved design enhancements.

Frequently
Asked Questions.

Understand the implant, wearable, activation process, and eligibility evaluation.

Ask our team
What is Genio® therapy?

Genio is an FDA-approved implantable treatment for selected adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. It uses a battery-free implanted stimulator powered by a wearable beneath the chin.

How does Genio therapy work?

It stimulates the hypoglossal nerves on both sides of the tongue. The resulting muscle activity helps keep the upper airway open while you sleep.

Is Genio® therapy FDA approved?

Yes. The FDA approved the Genio System 2.1 in August 2025 for a defined group of adults with moderate-to-severe OSA. A clinical evaluation is needed to confirm eligibility.

Is surgery required?

Yes. The battery-free stimulator is implanted under the chin during an outpatient surgical procedure. Your surgeon will discuss risks, recovery, and follow-up.

Who may be eligible for Genio therapy?

Candidates are adults age 22 or older with OSA and an AHI of 15–65 whose standard treatment options have failed, are not tolerated, or are unsuitable. Your team also reviews anatomy, BMI, medical history, and other device-specific requirements.

When is Genio therapy activated?

Activation is typically planned approximately eight weeks after implantation. Your treating team confirms the timing based on your recovery and care plan.

Does Genio therapy use a smartphone app?

An optional app supports device usage tracking and therapy adjustments within a predefined range. Your care team explains how to use it with your prescribed settings.

How can I find out if Genio therapy is right for me?
